Discovery Channel- Enlightening us?
Last night I was sucked into watching a "documentary" on a shark called Submarine. This was on Animal Planet and was originally aired on Discovery Channel. I'm a pretty gullible person. I'll be the first to admit it. I like to think of myself as trusting. As of late however, I find myself very skeptical of most of the things I see on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. This was no exception. I've let my kids watch these channels most of their lives. My son is 8 and my daughter is 5 and they have a lot of questions about the things they're seeing. My son has been into Sharks since I can remember. He's really into all ocean life. He's just fascinated by it. And to me, that is a beautiful thing. I love watching him learn. But between Megalodon, Russian Yeti, and Mermaid shows... I can't keep explaining to him, even though they seem convincing, these things are not real.
Not to mention- Last night we were watching Discovery Channel for a minute before he went to bed and a commercial for Naked and Afraid came on the television. It showed a man and a woman lying next to each other naked. They were lying on their sides, the man behind the woman, separated by about 6 inches, and her full backside was visible. There was no blurring of her butt. The man then reached his hand over to her and caressed up from her butt to her back. This was extremely inappropriate. I expected a lot more from The Discovery Channel. I didn't think I would be harming my child's innocents by letting him watch this channel. I won't make that mistake again. He's no longer allowed to watch it. Which is sad because it use to be such a great doorway to understanding the world. It is truly disappointing.
You've failed when it comes to your mission statement. Let's get back to the facts. They're interesting all on their own...
